Honestly, there is no shame in this. It took me a really long time to understand what it truly means to hold a clean space for someone. Studying counselling and Reiki gave me the knowledge and foundations, but it was through practice, experience, and my own inner work that I began to understand what holding space really asks of us. When someone shares their struggles with us, we haven't necessarily lived through the same emotional roller coaster they have. And because we're looking at their situation from the outside, we might be able to see certain things more clearly, or even recognise patterns before they do. But just because we can see something doesn't mean they're ready to see it too. And that's okay. Of course, we can offer our perspectives and advice. Sometimes, that's exactly what someone needs. But other times, what they're really looking for is someone willing to understand their experience through the only way they can share it with us — their words. Someone who listens without rushing to respond. Someone who tries to understand what it might have been like to walk the path they've walked. Someone who can sit with them, even when they don't have an answer. Because holding space isn't always about helping someone get somewhere. This is what we call coping strategies. And there is no shame in having them. Sometimes they develop around really difficult experiences like abuse or bullying. Sometimes it is much more ordinary. You didn’t want to go to school, but you had to. You didn’t want to eat your vegetables, but your mum made you. I remember once, I had to go to school the next day for an injection and I really didn’t want to. I cried. I screamed. I kicked up a fuss. My father eventually dragged me into a room by one arm, closed the door, and left me there. When I came out, I stopped crying and turned on the TV. The next day, I went for the injection completely calm. No tears. Then I went home and watched more TV. Years later, seven months into my first job, the company announced that it was shutting down. One of the first things I did? I went home and rewatched Ugly Betty. There is nothing wrong with having ways to soothe yourself. We all need them. The problem is when escaping becomes your main response—so much that you stop noticing the choices you have, the things you can change, or the ways you could make your real life better. When I was eight, my father took the family to a hawker centre and bought food for everyone to share. But I didn’t want to eat. I was tired and just wanted to rest, so I kept nodding off instead of picking up my cutlery. He got upset with me. He said he had brought us out and bought us food so we could be happy, but instead I was being a wet blanket. Then he sat there sulking until everyone finished eating. I think a part of me learnt something that day: Give people what you think they want, even if it means abandoning yourself. Because that’s how you stay safe. And that’s how a people pleaser was born. It took me a long time to walk out of that pattern. Some relationships fell apart in the process. And many times, I genuinely wondered if I was the problem. But I’ve arrived somewhere very different now. My inner circle is smaller and more intimate, but I feel safer being myself in it. And perhaps that’s the kind of safety I was looking for all along. Not every season arrives with an explanation. Sometimes clarity only comes after we’ve lived through the uncertainty, released what we could no longer carry, and become someone capable of seeing the journey differently. Maybe we don’t need to have the whole path figured out. Maybe, for now, it’s enough to stay present and trust that even the chapters we don’t understand are shaping us.

Manifestation isn’t only about intention. It also takes energy and capacity—to focus, visualise, take action, and keep going.
