This is what we call coping strategies. And there is no shame in having them. Sometimes they develop around really difficult experiences like abuse or bullying. Sometimes it is much more ordinary. You didn’t want to go to school, but you had to. You didn’t want to eat your vegetables, but your mum made you. I remember once, I had to go to school the next day for an injection and I really didn’t want to. I cried. I screamed. I kicked up a fuss. My father eventually dragged me into a room by one arm, closed the door, and left me there. When I came out, I stopped crying and turned on the TV. The next day, I went for the injection completely calm. No tears. Then I went home and watched more TV. Years later, seven months into my first job, the company announced that it was shutting down. One of the first things I did? I went home and rewatched Ugly Betty. There is nothing wrong with having ways to soothe yourself. We all need them. The problem is when escaping becomes your main response—so much that you stop noticing the choices you have, the things you can change, or the ways you could make your real life better. When I was eight, my father took the family to a hawker centre and bought food for everyone to share. But I didn’t want to eat. I was tired and just wanted to rest, so I kept nodding off instead of picking up my cutlery. He got upset with me. He said he had brought us out and bought us food so we could be happy, but instead I was being a wet blanket. Then he sat there sulking until everyone finished eating. I think a part of me learnt something that day: Give people what you think they want, even if it means abandoning yourself. Because that’s how you stay safe. And that’s how a people pleaser was born. It took me a long time to walk out of that pattern. Some relationships fell apart in the process. And many times, I genuinely wondered if I was the problem. But I’ve arrived somewhere very different now. My inner circle is smaller and more intimate, but I feel safer being myself in it. And perhaps that’s the kind of safety I was looking for all along. Not every season arrives with an explanation. Sometimes clarity only comes after we’ve lived through the uncertainty, released what we could no longer carry, and become someone capable of seeing the journey differently. Maybe we don’t need to have the whole path figured out. Maybe, for now, it’s enough to stay present and trust that even the chapters we don’t understand are shaping us.

Manifestation isn’t only about intention. It also takes energy and capacity—to focus, visualise, take action, and keep going. Pls enjoy my low budget production of this reel 🤣 This reel is a little glimpse into how I came to this work. Before this, I spent 14 years in finance. I had a life that looked stable from the outside, but inside, I felt anxious, disconnected, and lost. That journey became part of why I do what I do today. I now support people through counselling, Reiki treatment sessions, and Reiki workshops, especially those who feel like they are functioning on the outside, but not fully living on the inside.
